Why does guitar center charge sales tax
I'm friends with the number 2 man in the store so it doesn't really matter. I of course don't like Peavey so I wouldn't do that. Not all. So, generally if you stick to your guns or you know the manager half of the list price is always the best starting place for buying in GC.
I'm not talking about walking to the accessory section and demanding you buy a pack of Ernie Ball's for what the store paid for them. But, to get back on the OP's question, paying less than the advertised price is the best way to effectively cancel sales tax and then some.

It's not the ordering method, it's that nexus in your state. Thing will get more fun as states try to reach agreements to collect sales tax for each other.

I don't see how it will fly, but the governments are always working on extracting cash. The short answer is that because there is a guitar center in CA, you have to pay sales tax regardless of which guitar center your order from.
Walking into a store with an out of state check won't keep you from paying sales tax either. It was purchased in the store. To not pay sales tax the item has to be delievered to a state where that company does not have a physical presence. CA will most likely want you to report and pay it "use tax".

If you live in California and go to Guitarrodeo or some simliar out of state company that has no California presence of any kind, you can buy the guitar without paying sales tax but that store can not let you take it with you or they would be in big trouble if they are caught. It must be shipped to your California address and the store has to keep the record of it being shipped there if they are audited. The only way to avoid paying sales tax is to buy from a company in another state that has no presence of any kind - not even subsidiaries or partner companies - in your own state - and have it shipped to you there.
Many companies include free shipping on guitars - especially higher priced ones they sell by mail - but not all. Both the retailer and the producer must keep on file for four years a copy of the tax exemption certificate. Retailers may advertise exemptions. Studios need to provide a supplier with either an exemption or resale certificate on qualifying purchases. Resale requires a Comptroller Tax ID number; exemption certificates do not.
If a studio uses the tape for producing a master and then sells that tape and the services provided to make the master tape , the tape is still tax exempt. One scenario: studio buys blank tape from supplier; band then buys this blank tape from the studio; this purchase is still tax exempt.
